Case Study”
Khurarrianwala (Faisalabad) is well known as an Industrial Hub in Pakistan. Many Textile firms are manufacturing different products and mostly export these products to foreign customers. Merchandisers of each industry send their product’s samples to foreign customers for approval of product design, shape, and quality etc. Till 2004, most of the industries had to go to FedEx office Faisalabad to handover their parcels to be delivered to the foreign customers. By analyzing the growing demand in this area, DHL opened its office in Khurarrianwala in 2004. DHL offered the logistic services to all firms for sending their product samples to foreign customers. Textile firms in that area used to hand over their parcels to DHL at their Khurrarianwala office and the daily closing time of sample collection was 05:00 PM. Some of the students of a University located in Faisalabad conducted a research and found that 70% market share in that area was captured by DHL till end of 2005. At the end of 2006, all firms switched over from FedEx to DHL. The major reason of switch over was the distant location of FedEx as it was 40 KM away from the area. Afteranalyzing this situation; FedEx started to collect samples (parcels) from each and every firm in that area and created the competition for DHL. FedEx got the 90% market share in that area at the end of 2009 but DHL had only 10% market share at that time. Customers are more satisfied with FedEx as many merchandisers said that FedEx delivery system is bit fast.
Answer the following questions:
1. How could DHL have got the lost customers back?
2. If DHL had also started collection of samples from every firm then how would FedEx have retained its competitive edge?

Discussion Question

Scenario:
M/S Wanden manufactures air conditioners for cars. Engineering department at Wanden has a well organized system of “defect tracking” but top management has decided to enhance the defect tracking system further. Although the top management has assured the employees that the new system will be lot easier and will take less time as compared with the old one but their assurance could not convince the employees. They did not believe that the new processes would result in superior quality. Rather, employees were of the view that old system was working perfectly fine and changing that system would result in poor performance and damage the overall company’s image. Engineering department was performing the core function and therefore always regarded a higher status. Therefore, they always had an upper hand on any issue and they always had the final say over reporting defects. Changing this process caused the engineers to feel that their competence and capabilities were being questioned and their autonomy was in jeopardy. The reaction was constantly passive resistance.Time is flying and production backlog is building up due to the situation. Hence, Wanden will not meet the demand and lose orders, profit and eventually market share. Clock is clicking!

Question:
Suppose you are the GM of Wanden how would you implement the new change without compromisingthe concerns of Engineering Department? Answer should be precise and to the point.

SCENARIO
Two companies ABC and XYZ, in FMCG business, are recently cited in “Working Mother Magazine” as the best companies for women to work. Each company provides special packages to its employees that benefit working mothers. The ABC Company offers all of its employees time off from work for family matters. And the XYZ Company offers its employees Rs.15, 000 in Education/Medical for their children along with salary.
While sharing the views at a press conference the directors of winning companies said, “three decades ago, in our organizations the employees were predominately males but today the work force is not that homogeneous. It comprises of more females than males which made us realized that the way we have treated workers with children in the past and the benefits we offered them, may no longer meet their current needs. Family life is important to our workers and, in many cases, will win out in the decision of career versus family. That’s why we decided to be responsive to the female workforce requirements. We also believe that one way to successfully compete is to meet the worker’s individualized needs.”
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Analyze the family-friendly benefits offered by both companies. Discuss with solid arguments which company’s benefits are better for the employees.
2. Suppose in both companies 50% employees are unmarried/without childreni.e. half of the employees can not avail these benefits. Is there any motivational impact on those employees who do not avail these benefits? Explain briefly.
